Part of the excitement of a DIY project is customizing the look of your project.  This open hardwood floor required some difficult alignments and a lot of splining to properly install the 3-1/4″ red oak floor with clear maple inlays.  Recommendations for other DIY addicts are the following:

  • Measure twice and cut once!  When laying a floor requiring inlays and integration with one room or hall to another it is best to measure out and calculate scope out wood directions and joints so as not to cause yourself grief when things do not line up.
  • This hardwood floor used unfinished hardwoods that were later was sanded, stained, and finished.  During this stage, the oak floor adjacent to the inlays was taped in order to keep the oak naturally unfinished prior to it being stained on the next step.  Polyurethane oil-based finish was applied in two separate coats and allowed to dry.  The tape was removed from the oak and then the tape was applied directly over top of all the maple so that the staining of the red oak could be completed without discoloring the now freshly finished maple inlays.
